Ginny Shubert
Background: Ginny is a 34 year old white straight woman. She graduated from Harvard Law School. She was a partner at a Wall Street law firm, then left to do pro bono legal work with death row inmates in Florida. She recently returned to New York and founded the AIDS Project of the Coalition for the Homeless.
Role in ACT UP: Ginny is not an ACT UP regular. She is at tonight’s meeting to talk to the Floor about a lawsuit demanding safe housing for people with AIDS and ARC.
Groups/friends at the meeting: Eric Sawyer, Charles King, Caucus to House Homeless PWA’s Now
Specific tasks at the March 13, 1989 meeting: Ginny is on the agenda to discuss a case that she recently filed: Mixon v. Grinker. Her major points will be:
There is a city/state memo differentiating the services available to People with AIDS (PWAs) and People with AIDS Related Complex (PWARCs). The city requires that PWARCS live in shelters until they develop AIDS, at which point they become eligible for housing.
The case that she is bringing, Mixon v. Grinker, will demand safe housing for PWARCs. There is currently a lack of access, a lack of guidelines, and a lack of notification services.
Everyone -- PWAs and PWARCs -- must demand housing, and when that is denied they should contact her, as that could serve as evidence that the city is not really attempting to house PWAs/PWARCs within 24 hours as they are required to do.
