Background: Brian is a 25 year old white gay man. Brian grew up in Texas as a farm boy. He had sex with a boy when he was 12, but was closeted through most of college, having sex mostly at adult book stores. He went to University of Texas in Austin, where he worked on the student newspaper, and then moved to New York in 1987 and came to his first ACT UP meeting in February 1988. He is a cub reporter at a small publication called Manhattan Lawyer. He lives in Williamsburg.
Role in ACT UP: Brian is on the Target City Hall planning committee, handling city issues. Brian had joined and previously co-chaired the Actions Committee with Andrew Miller. Brian has been uncomfortable with the idea of getting arrested, so he has concentrated on marshalling, which he learned from Amy Bauer and Jean Elizabeth Glass in advance of the FDA action.
Groups/friends at the meeting: The principals planning Target City Hall; Mark Carson (who works in the same building as Brian at Park Avenue between 32nd and 33rd St. and is the person who encouraged Brian to come to ACT UP)
Specific tasks at the March 13, 1989 meeting: Brian is on the agenda to discuss Marshal Training and announce a marshal training session that will take place at the Center this coming Thursday. He will let the Floor know what a marshal does, and summarize the training (click here for the training sheet).
Brian should also distribute a draft of the City Hall Fact Sheet and ask the Floor to discuss whether anything should be added or changed. He should ask for feedback about any of it, but should read the "The City Can" section at the end out loud to the Floor and specfically ask if anything should be added or changed. The administrator will bring the copies of the fact sheet, so Brian should get those from the administrator.
Brian also will announce a teach-in about City Issues on Friday at 8pm at the Center.
